It's probably because the first song by him was Kingdom Of The Fearless, which was fucking epic for me at the time. So I tend to like that era more. I think his more hair metal stuff isn't as good. VS has always suffered from very poor production, but since I can hear almost all the instruments clearly in stuff after Invictus, they are fine in my book. Also, his voice has gotten better, and songwriting tighter. I just consider the guitar sound just part of Virgin Steele.
